Part 1 After 6 hrs on new 4100, drained oil and removed filter. My dealer is 2hrs distant, so went to auto parts store for aftermarket filter. Gave them JD part no.AM101378 to cross reference. Purchased Wix equivalent, drove home and immediately learned the new filter was not even close to OEM size and shape. Next day, called parts store to check number and they said no mistake. – Clearly this was not the case, so I called JD and learned part no. had been changed to M806418. Called parts store for cross reference and they had none. Had to drive 2 hrs. to get JD oil filter. Q.1> Does anyone know of aftermarket alternative for M806418?While replacing filter, noticed it looked much like the one for my Mercury 90 HP 4-stroke outboard (Yamaha powerhead). Compared filters. Mercury’s ( no. 35-822626A2) was 1” longer, but had same diameter, color, no of holes, same thread and same “O” ring style gasket. Both had a “Y” stamped in filter face and both looked exactly the same as I observed interior bypass valve construction. Suspect both filters are made by same vendor. Q.2> Will investigate further, but does anyone know who makes JD M806418 filter?Q.3> Anyone know why JD changed filters? Did the AM101378 cause problems?

Not a clue on your questions. I just opted for the JD part to make things easy and to make sure that I had the right part. So I drove the 20 minutes ot the dealer, got the part and headed home. Drained the oil, pulled the old filter and dicovered it was completely different than the new one - tll and narrow vs short and wide [or was it the other way?]. Back to the dealer who seached the records and parts list and then assured me it was the correct part. Not sure what the change accomplished, but it made things a little closer in that area. I suggest thatt the next time you drop by the dealer, you just pick up an extra. ....

Obviously we are all pretty sure that John Deere doesn't make their own filters or oil (or engines or other parts for that matter). It is contracted out of course. Certainly for warranty purposes alone though, you should probably get their filter because if anything goes wrong you don't want a dealer to see a different filter on the machine. Just out of curiosity, why are you changing the oil at 6HOURS? I also have a 4100. ....

I have no problem with JD parts, but a. would like best filter available and PF Ultraguard Brand (if there was an adequate replacement) is what I prefer (see AC Delco web page and read often cited discussion of oil filters on web; b. I live 2 hrs drive from dealer, so aftermarket source is more convenient. I was originally caught off guard that a replacement/alternative to OEM would not be available. As far as I can tell, neither NAPA or CarQuest have substitute filters.
Why change after 6 hrs? a. precautionary to get metal dust and filings, etc., out of system. Such WAS visible in oil when I checked the dipstick! Finally, seemed prudent to change with no downside, except that I had to locate a filter. ....

My JD dealer is also a couple of hours away. I used to drive there. Now I just pick up the phone and ask the dealer to send a box of filters. UPS delivers the next day. No matter how good aftermarket filters are, I figure the stock ones are designed for that engine....and as cheap as they are I can change them twice as often. If you want micro-filtering then no full flow filter has this. You have to go to an aftermarket bypass filter - this used to be a more common practice than it is today. A full flow plus an auxillary bypass type is still a great way to filter anything.
Congratulations on the 4100! Isn't that still the last of the 100% Yanmar-built JD's? If so, it is hard to buy a better filter than Yanmar makes....IF John Deere is using the original Yanmar filter. BTW, I agree with changing the oil for the first time at very low hours for exactly the reasons that you give.

I jumped up and down at JD when they handed me this little teeny filter (BIGGER BETTER ugh-ugh). It seems that it is a side cover to the engine compartment problem. If you service the tractor with the loader installed the side cover tangs at the bottom will not disengage and let the cover off. Haven't tried it with loader on. But that was what was in the service bullentin. ....

Finally learned via phone that AC Delco Ultragold UPF1127 can be used on 4100; size is larger in diameter than JD, but gasket size is correct and threads are same too, as far as I can tell. It has great synthetic media, O-ring type of gasket and seems to work well.
Expensive, but quality filter in my view. I believe Merc Outboard and JD filter for 4100 are made by Champion Labs and both have same specs, except for length of filter. Merc filter is longer. I am on my second UPF 1127. First did not leak or cause problems so I am sticking with it. ....

Selling the different makes tractors we do and trying to keep customers coming to us for all there needs is a never ending battle. Now just a few thoughts on what I know are facts on filters. You might find 100 different filters that have the o-ring or gasket and the center bolt that matches every thing you have perfectly. Now for the differences, most all applications have different amounts of oil going thru the filters, have different pressures to live under, and might be designed for a different oil as well as a different amount of filtration and some are equipped with anti-drain back of oil. To save $2.00 on a filter might not be saving anything but costing you! Think about this, whoe could order and sell more of one piece than the company that originally sold and built the piece. You are getting less if the price is less. You buy the good oil and run it thru a cheap filter so you can change your oil more often than it's supposed to be changed? Why? Dollars and what? ....

The UPF1127 costs about $10 compared with about 5 for JD. Both filters are made by Champion Labs and to the same specs regarding anti-drain back values and pressure release. UPF AC Delco is top-of-line filter with synthetic media. Since oil in Diesel gets dirtier faster, I will use UPF 1127 as insurance. Further, I change oil @ 6 hrs an filter every 12. Oil quantity is only 2 qts, so even using Mobil's best 15-40, it is no biggie.
I shall post picts of all filters soon, including cut-aways from used filters of all types. If JD made its own filters, I would be more inclined to by JD. But if a better is available, why not use it. Marginal issue I suppose, but that is my choice.
